Anna's Story



One of our CHAT Line volunteers received a call from Anna, who cares for her husband who has dementia. When she called, she was distressed and said that she planned to kill herself that night - her husband’s condition was getting worse and she couldn’t see another way out.

She had already taken pills and drank a bottle of wine; she said nothing could convince her to stop going through with her intention that night. Our volunteer gave Anna emotional support and signposted the offerings out there which help carers. 

She also asked Anna some questions to try to pin point her address; she told Anna that her phone was out of battery so could she have her phone number. Eventually she gave our volunteer her full details and an abulance was called - however, that day, there was a shortage of ambulances, so Anna had a long wait time.

In the meantime, the two talked about Anna’s life, her history, her family, and her situation. After some time, Anna said she was feeling much better and said she was not going to go through with her plans of suicide. Our volunteer cancelled the abulance, but made sure Anna had support the next day.

Anna was then referred to the Lancashire Wellbeing Service and was booked in for a Carers Assessment Review. She said:

"I can't thank you enough. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be here.”
