Beat the Monday Blues

The third Monday of January has been awarded the gloomiest day of the year due to post Christmas blues, cold and dark mornings, low motivation levels and the thought of our next break being so, so far away.

Our lives have become increasingly busy and more stressful, leaving us less time to switch off and do the things we love.

January is the month of “New Year, New Me!” so why not try something new? Picking up a new hobby that involves using your hands to produce something challenging not only relieves stress but also gives you a sense of accomplishment, improving mental health and wellbeing. It doesn’t have to break the bank either; here are our top 5 picks:

1.Encourage further learning with Cross-Stitch

This involves a high level of skill, focus and concentration, ideal for perfectionists and those who want to take their mind off something troubling.

2.Let painting become your mental happy place

Painting encourages creative and emotional growth, which can increase a positive attitude and relieve stress.

3.Colouring books aren’t just for children

Anxiety is one of the most common adult mental health issues. Colouring books allow you to remove negative issues and focus on something creative. Colouring books are known to help individuals who suffer from stress, depression, anger management and substance abuse.

4.Challenge you and learn a new language

Learning a new language improves your memory, perceptive and decision making. This skill opens up a world of new opportunities such as travelling and better job prospects.

5. Get to know your kitchen

Cooking gives you instant gratification that you know exactly what is in your food and how you made it. Improve your social skills by inviting a friend round to try out your recipes!
