Carers' Support: Karam and Amira's Story

Karam and Amira were referred to the Cheshire East Carers’ Hub. They were Syrian refugees waiting to hear about their residency. At the time, they were living in a Home Office property but were having conflict issues with the person they were sharing with and weren’t getting support from their Housing Officer.

The house wasn’t suitable for Amira, who has Multiple Sclerosis, and Karam, her brother and carer, felt completely socially isolated because they were the only Syrian refugees in Crewe. He wasn’t able to apply for work, take educational courses, or volunteer and the pay for people of refugee status in the UK is £5 per day.

Amira wasn’t getting proper treatment medication for her MS, which meant that Karam could never leave her side. Both Karam and Amira had a stressful traumatic year-long journey to the UK and have left beloved family members behind. They both needed help.

Richard, from the Cheshire East Carers’ Hub had regular phone contact with Karam, giving him emotional support. He also contacted other organisations who could help the siblings, such as the local food bank, local churches, MS Society, Patient Transport Service, Alternative Solutions, and more. Richard and his colleagues donated essential items like food, clothes, and toiletries, and he helped Karam and Amira fill out a Living Well Fund application.

Since the referral was made, Amira has received essential medical equipment and treatment and Karam was given £325 by the Living Well Fund. He spent this money on items to improve his life, such as a DVD player so that he could learn English better (he didn’t have a television of licence due to cost), a new mattress, heaters, toiletries, and a mini fridge because his food was being stolen by people he lived with.
