CHAT Line: Angela and Betty's Story
When Angela began volunteering for n-compass’ CHAT Line - a phone support service for carers - she was soon matched with Betty.
Betty's husband had recently passed away and she was his full-time carer. During such a difficult time in her life, she had no children, family, or friends to talk to.
Although it was short and sweet, their first phone call went smoothly, with Angela describing it saying: “It was a little nerve-wracking at first, because I didn’t know what to expect. But once we introduced ourselves and had a little chat, it was like picking up the phone to speak to a family member.”
Needed support and Angela was there for her. In the early stages of her grief, Betty had a lot of practical issues which she found overwhelming, so Angela talked through each of those issues with her as a way of helping her gain perspective.
Receiving emotional support helped Betty to reach out to others, too. She became friends with someone else who was in a similar situation, which widened her support network. Betty said that wouldn’t have been possible without Angela’s support.
"I think there is something powerful about a volunteer reaching out to a carer, ringing for them, when traditionally they have been in the shadows looking after others. I’m not sure she would have reached out otherwise,” Angela said. “It’s been fantastic talking to Betty. I feel good that I’ve been able to really listen to her and support her through such a tough time.”
