Help For Carers: Anne's Story
Anne has been registered with the Cheshire East Carers’ Hub service for quite some time, getting involved in activities and being a valued member of one of the carers’ groups.
Recently, she’s had a number of difficulties in her life and has been struggling to cope - she’s needed both emotional and practical support and she turned to the Cheshire East Carers’ Hub.
Anne works part time but, after getting a new manager, the number of hours she worked and their timings changed. She tried to raise these issues with her new manager, but they weren’t particularly approachable and didn’t show much appreciation for her situation.
She doesn’t just need her job for financial reasons, working also makes Anne feel part of society and it gives her a break from her role as a carer, too. The Cheshire East Carers’ Hub tried to contact the company’s HR department on Anne’s behalf, but had little success. Her situation at work only became more stressful.
During this time, the Cheshire East Carers’ Hub was also offering a self-advocacy course; Anne went along and was able to speak to the staff there about her difficulties. The Hub made contact with ACAS (the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service which helps to improve organisations and working life), arranging its assistance with drafting a letter to Anne’s employer.
Alongside her problems at work, Anne’s father was also diagnosed with cancer. The Hub offered her one-to-one emotional support, plus she was able to receive support from the carers’ group, too. She was also referred to our CHAT Line (Carers Help And Talk Line), where she will be befriended by a volunteer who will be there to support her.
Anne said that she would have ‘gone under’ if it weren’t for the help of the staff at The Hub supporting her. The courses have given her the knowledge and confidence to stand up for herself, the groups and activities have given her breaks from her caring role and she said: “It was so important for me to know there was someone to turn to.”
