Henry's Advocacy Journey
A social worker referred her client who needed a Care Act Advocate to The Wirral Advocacy Hub at the end of 2019. Henry, the client, was going through the process for a new Needs Assessment.
He was being assessed because he wanted to move from one supported living placement to another. However, Henry has autism, which means that he can get extremely anxious and has an expectation that his worries will be confronted immediately.
He wanted to move because of the noise from his next door neighbour, having already made complaints to his landlord, the police, the council, and his MP over the last 4 years. Other people felt that he exaggerated the noise and its effects because his autism has caused him to be very sensitive to sound.
A very intelligent man, Henry was more than capable of communicating his wishes and feelings, but he would often get very upset too. Because of this, The Wirral Advocacy Hub provided Henry with an advocate who liaised with not only Henry, but two social workers and an advanced mental health practitioner, because he was funded by health and social care.
Rhodri, Henry’s advocate, went to meetings with all parties to help and support Henry with his engagement in the assessment process, so that he could be fully involved. At this point, he had two social workers because one left their post mid way through the process. Rhodri gave Henry support when meeting the new social worker who completed the assessment.
n the first stages, Henry didn’t properly engage. He wasn’t answering his door and he was cancelling meetings. This was because of his anxiety about the situation but, after some time, Rhrodi and Henry’s new social worker gained his trust.
By using strength-based questioning, the assessments were successfully completed and were a better reflection of Henry’s needs in a new setting. He was offered placements elsewhere. Henry was also supported and empowered more in dealing with his own issues, such as talking to the support staff in his home. Henry said: “I feel better now I’ve been listened to and things are finally being done.”
