Lilliana's Counselling Story

Lilliana, who is 14-years-old, was referred to n-compass’ counselling service by the pastoral team at her school. She was using self-harm to try to cope with a close family member dying.

Since the death of her loved one just over a year before her referral, Lilliana had been struggling with low mood and little self-confidence. Her mum was supportive, but Lilliana feared that she would upset her mum if she spoke about how she was feeling and how she was trying to cope by harming herself.

Lilliana and her counsellor developed an effective relationship, where she could express herself while knowing she was in a safe space. Together, they explored her thoughts and feelings, and were able to work out what her self-harm triggers are.

They did that by letting Lilliana know that it’s okay to grieve, using grief models to give her a greater understanding of her feelings. The pair explored the cycle of self-harm and found other ways for Lilliana to cope with her feelings. Namely, distracting or expressing herself.

In counselling, Lilliana explored her feelings and built her confidence. She made her own ‘positive affirmation cards’, which could fit in her pocket, so she could access them anytime she needed.

When her final session came around, she wanted to create something to remember her therapeutic journey – she decorated small pebble, small enough to keep with her, with all the positive words we had used in the sessions.  Key words that meant something to her.

After her time with n-compass’ counselling service had come to an end, Lilliana had stopped self-harming, no longer had suicidal thoughts and, with help, had found other types of coping mechanisms. Her confidence had increased, too.
