World Suicide Prevention Day 2016

More communication and knowledge of suicide is vital to help prevent further deaths. Currently, it’s estimated that over 800,000 people die by suicide each year. Increasing our overall awareness of suicide will allow entire communities to band together and prevent deaths. Addressing depression in children and adults is imperative for helping improve mental health.

Suicide is much higher in males than females, which can be attributed to a number of reasons, such as the decline of traditional male gender roles, masculinity, challenges in mid-life, and limiting outpours of emotions. Encouraging more conversation surrounding suicide, especially for men, could help build stronger relationships and help with mental health issues. A specific campaign has been created targeting men: #ITSOKAYTOTALK

There are a number of statistics that help understand how suicide affects people in the UK alone:

  • - In 2014, on average, 16.8 men per 100,000 committed suicide
  • - In 2014, on average, 5.2 women per 100,000 committed suicide
  • - The age group with the highest suicide rate is 45-59 years old

That’s why World Suicide Prevention Day is so important for bringing more knowledge and understanding to everyone in your community and throughout the country. Show your support for World Suicide Prevention Day by sharing this article or visiting any of the below websites:
