Are You A Carer?
Do you look after a family member or friend who couldn’t manage without your support? Perhaps they have a long-term illness, disability, mental health condition, or issues related to ageing.
Whether you provide care for a few hours a week or around the clock, your role is invaluable. But who’s looking after you?
Are You A Young Carer?
You might be looking after a parent, sibling, or relative who needs extra support. If you help at home in ways others your age don’t, you’re not alone – we’re here for you.
If you support someone living in Staffordshire or registered with a GP in Staffordshire, Staffordshire Together for Carers service, and our dedicated service for young carers, is here for you.

How can we support you?
We’re here to support you in your caring role for as long as you choose, while helping to protect your health and well-being. We understand that being a carer can be both rewarding and challenging. Our team offers expert information, guidance, and a wide range of personalised support to make life a little easier.
We take the time to listen, understand your needs, and create a tailored support plan just for you because every carer’s journey is unique.
What Can We Offer?
Support for Adult & Parent Carers
Male Carers
You might not see yourself as a carer, but if you’re supporting a partner, parent, child, friend, or neighbour because of illness, disability, mental health issues, or substance use, you’re not alone. Many men tell us they’re “just getting on with it”, balancing work, family, and caring responsibilities, often without support. Staffordshire Together for Carers is here to help in a practical and respectful way. We can provide clear information, help you understand your rights and options, support you with work or finances, and offer a space to discuss things if they become overwhelming. Support is available at your own pace, in a way that suits you.

Parent Carers
If you’re a parent caring for a child or young person with additional needs, a disability, long‑term health condition, or mental health needs, you might see it simply as part of being a parent, even when it feels exhausting or overwhelming. Many parent carers put their own needs last while managing appointments, education, finances, and everyday family life. Staffordshire Together for Carers is here to support you. We can help you understand what support you’re entitled to, discuss challenges related to school or services, offer practical advice, and assist you in finding time and space for yourself. Support is flexible and tailored to your family, with more detailed information available for you to explore when you’re ready.
Support For Young Carers
We know being a young carer can be tough at times, and we’re here for you. We can help you to:
Community Grant Scheme
The Community Grant Scheme helps local groups and organisations run activities that support carers in Staffordshire. It is designed to strengthen community‑based support and create local networks that make a real difference to carers’ lives.
The scheme is managed by Support Staffordshire, who oversee applications and offers guidance throughout the process. Grants can be used to support a wide range of activities, including:
The scheme is open to voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations that want to develop or expand support for carers at a local level.
Find out more about Support Staffordshire: https://www.supportstaffordshire.org.uk
To apply please fill out the online form here
Support Staffordshire can also help you understand whether your idea is eligible and guide you through the application process, please email them at consultancy@supportstaffordshire.org.uk
Statutory carer’s assessments
A Carer’s Assessment is a free conversation about your needs as a carer. Both adult carers and young carers can have a Carer’s Assessment.
In Staffordshire, these are carried out by Staffordshire County Council. They help you understand how caring impacts you and explore the support available to help you continue in your caring role. If you are a young carer, they can talk with you (and your family) about how caring affects you and what support might make things easier at home or school.
To arrange a Carer’s Assessment, please contact the Council by phone on 0300 111 8010 or email firstcontactcarers@staffordshire.gov.uk.
Carer Awareness For Professionals
We work with professionals and organisations across Staffordshire to raise awareness of unpaid carers, helping to identify and support more people in caring roles.
Our flexible, tailored approach is designed to suit your time, setting, and professional needs. Support can include:
- Carer Awareness Briefings
- Carer Awareness Training
- Carer Champion Training
- Guidance for organisations and groups working towards our Carer Friendly Mark
If you’re a professional and would like to learn more or get involved, please get in touch.

Who Is A Carer?
A carer is someone who provides unpaid support to a loved one who would struggle without them. This could be helping with everyday tasks, providing emotional support, or managing medication and appointments.
Many carers don’t even realise they are carers – they just see it as ‘helping out’ or ‘doing what family does.’ But your role is important, and you deserve support too.
