Independent Visitor Service

Independent Visitors are volunteers who get to know you and offer steady support while you’re in care. If you live in St Helens, you may be able to have an Independent Visitor.

What is an Independent Visitor?

An Independent Visitor is an adult volunteer who is separate from your social worker, your care home, and children’s services.

They’re there for you. They listen, support you, and help you feel less alone during your time in care. You can talk to them about what matters to you, at your own pace.

What does an Independent Visitor do?

An Independent Visitor is someone you can spend time with and talk things through with, they are separate from any other adult in your life. You can share what’s on your mind, ask questions, or get support with something you’re finding difficult.

Independent Visitors come from all walks of life. They can be a positive role model, someone who encourages you, takes an interest in your goals, and helps you build confidence.

They’re not paid to see you they volunteer because they want to be there and make a difference.

Your Independent Visitor can:

  • Listen to you — whether you want to share something fun, or something serious
  • Support you through difficult or confusing times
  • Go out with you sometimes — for example for a walk or an activity
  • Be someone you can trust and rely on

Get In Touch

We’ll match you with an Independent Visitor by looking at your interests and what you enjoy. They’re completely separate from children’s services and the care system.

What you tell your Independent Visitor is confidential. The only time they would need to share information is if they’re worried about your safety or someone else’s safety.
