Ged’s Story: Rebuilding Life After A Brain Injury
Ged’s life changed in an instant when he was hit by a car, suffering a traumatic brain injury that left him with mobility and speech difficulties. Now reliant on a wheelchair, he spent a long period in hospital recovering. During his absence, his home was vandalised and became uninhabitable, forcing him to move into a care home while decisions were made about his future.
An N-Compass advocate worked closely with Ged for several months, listening to his wishes. It became clear that he wanted to return home, so the advocate requested a review of his Deprivation of Liberty order, arguing that a less restrictive option – his own home – was available.
The review sparked discussions about how to make this possible. The advocate suggested involving Ged’s son, who became instrumental in the process. Alongside Ged, the advocate, and his social worker, they developed a plan. His son hired builders to restore the house, adding essential adaptations for Ged’s mobility needs, while the social worker arranged a tailored support package.
After six months of collaboration, Ged finally returned home – living independently once again, in the place he loved.
