Michael’s Story: Regaining Independence And Stability
Michael, diagnosed with Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder and Autism, was detained under Section 3 of the Mental Health Act due to the risks he posed to himself and others. While in hospital, restrictive interventions were used to manage his impulsivity, which had previously led to incidents of aggression toward staff and patients.
An N-Compass advocate was assigned to support Michael in Best Interest meetings, where decisions about his care and restrictions were made. Despite his past challenges, staff acknowledged that he had not shown aggression for some time. Michael confided in his advocate that being on the ward left him feeling trapped and hopeless, and he desperately wanted to be discharged.
At the next Best Interest meeting, the advocate raised the possibility of gradually easing restrictions, given Michael’s progress. The team agreed on a structured plan to reduce his dependence on staff, allowing him more autonomy. As restrictions lifted, Michael’s mental health improved significantly, and he continued to demonstrate stability.
Over time, his restrictions were lifted entirely, leading to his eventual discharge as he had hoped. Now, with the right support in place, Michael enjoys a much more independent and fulfilling life.
