Today is World Suicide Prevention Day, and this year's theme, 'Changing the Narrative on Suicide,' resonates deeply with me. The focus is on raising awareness and reducing stigma by encouraging open, understanding, and supportive conversations. This is a cause that is very close to my heart, as I have been personally impacted by suicide.
When I was 11 years old, my mum took her own life. Things were different back then—there was even more stigma surrounding the issue than there is today. It was incredibly hard for people to come forward for support. My mum did try to reach out for help, but she didn’t get the support she needed. After trying to seek help and feeling that no other options were available, she made the tragic decision to end her life.
The effects of suicide leave lasting impacts not only on individuals but also on entire communities. But it doesn't have to be this way. We can all play our part in changing the narrative around suicide by being more open, compassionate, and supportive. By doing so, we can create an environment where those who are struggling feel safe to seek help, and where no one feels that suicide is their only option.
Let us all commit to changing the narrative on suicide and to being a community where every person feels heard, supported, and valued. Together, we can make a difference. Together, we can save lives.
