From a career spanning roles in international travel, academia and latterly self-employed business consultancy and training, my mother’s declining physical health, following many years of complex medical issues, and at the same time diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and Vascular dementia meant a requirement for me to provide fulltime home care until her death in early 2025. Navigating the many different medical and administrative paths required for her care and comfort (especially at a time of global pandemic), the many different specialities we interacted with and the effects it had on both of us, meant experiences, stresses and strains that can go unacknowledged outside the home, and can easily be forgotten or lost. It is these I hope can be used to contribute to N-Compasses’ work in supporting carers and their needs, and with Comensus (University of Lancashire) in conveying the experiences to future medical professionals.
